On January 24, 1985, the Province of Ontario issued Letters Patent creating Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation. The Corporation developed as a result of the growing awareness of the need to meet the housing requirements of senior citizens, individuals with special needs and family households whose shelter needs were not being met by the private market in Durham Region.
The role of Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation was and is not to compete with the private housing sector; but rather, to complement their efforts by supplying the needed affordable housing to those not served through this avenue.
The mission statement for Durham Non-Profit Housing is:
"To meet the housing needs of the Region`s diverse population through the provision of attractive and affordable housing and related services."
The Corporation`s portfolio includes 1,128 units under management located through the Region of Durham, with the exception of Ajax and Scugog, as well as the management on a contract basis of 53 units for Brock Non-Profit Housing. Our 18 sites vary in size from an 8-unit walk-up in Sunderland to a 110-unit high-rise apartment building in Whitby. There are also a number of townhouse sites and combinations of townhouse/apartment sites. Durham Non-Profit maintains its sites to a high standard and strives to participate in their communities. Most sites are staffed by resident superintendents.

Our role in the community`s social services network is continually being enhanced. We have shown leadership in a number of community-based initiatives such as the establishment of a community housing registry (the Housing Access Centre), dealing with housing policy, the forging of a link with the Durham Regional Police Department for community-based policing, and active participation on a number of committees, task teams, and working groups. This involvement will continue and grow over the coming years as the Corporation, like many private and public organizations, faces an ever-changing environment.
